                <description>Alfred Klein Keramik (AK Keramik).
Men eindigde hiermee in de jaren-80.
Alfred Klein Keramik (AK Keramik).
Little information can be found of the AK Keramik concern. It is known that the business was founded in 1934 in Ransbach Baumbach in Westerwald. Production started somewhere in the 30s and consisted of coffee and tea pots, jars, pots and vases. Activities ended in the 80s.
Most vases have been branded by hand with the inscription ‘Klein W. Germany’. All vases have a shape number, also applied manually. White clay was used. In the 30s and maybe the 40s ?? vases were finished off with the popular fat lava glazes. Specimen of later date are more neutral.Bron:

                <description>Bay Keramik.

Ontwerpers: o.a. Bodo Mans (&#039;Ravenna&#039; en &#039;Paris&#039; serie), Lu Klopfer en A. Seide.Bay Keramik.
Eduard Bay founded Bay Keramik in Ransbach-Baumbach in 1933. From the fifties to the beginning of the sixties Bay Keramik was one of the most successful ceramic businesses. Decorations can most often be felt (in relief) , quite often we see images with geometrical patterns. In 1967 Bay pioneered in making the so-called ‘Römertöpfe’. In that year they were presented at the ‘Hannover Messe’(a famous annual fair). It turned out that this business had been extremely successful in the manufacture of this product. That is why the management decided to market the porous, earthenware bowls with lids under the registerd brand name RÖMERTOPF.
Bay Keramik ceased to exist in 1997. The Gerz concern from Sessenbach incorprated the brand RÖMERTOPF and changed the name of the concern into RÖMERTOPF Keramik GmbH.To this day it is still located in Ransbach-Baumbach ( Weiherstrasse 1 to be precise). From this branch bowls for among other things meat, fish, potatoes, garlic and apples find their way to millions of households.

                <description>Carstens Tönnieshof / Carstens Tönnieshof.

On April 30th 1878 Christian Hinrich Carstens bought the Carstens &amp; Stahl wholesale trade. In 1892 Christian Carstens (†1929) acquired a ceramics business in Rheinsberg (Brandenburg) together with his brother Ernst Carstens (†1925). For a long time the business consisted of many branches, but due to WW II the business ceased to exist. After they had lost their ceramics and China factories on East German soil (Carstens Uffrecht) in 1945 (due to expropriation and conversion into state owned company), Ernst Carstens (son of the former Christian) together with his son Christian, founded the Carstens Tönnieshof concern. Carstens Uffrecht turned into the East German vase manufacturer VEB Haldensleben in 1945. The West German Carstens concern had been situated at Fredelsloh (Niedersachsen) and started production in spring 1947. Carstens did not only manufacture vases, but also lamp bases, candlesticks, wall reliefs, and clock casings.

Most shapes and decorative designs originated from Trude Carstens, founder Ernst Carstens’ wife. She was artistic director until her death in 1965. Rudolf Christmann succeeded her. He was the one who had been employed at Dümler &amp; Breiden and who joined the concern in 1966 to leave it in 1968.
Carstens only produced copies in limited amounts of each design, a lot less than e.g. Scheurich did. In the 70s there were branches in Brazil, Argentina, Chili, Australia, and Austria. The concern at Fredelsloh closed its doors in 1977. Financial problems put an end to Carstens Tönnieshof in 1984. Germany was reunited in 1990 and so it was that the former East German VEB Steingutfabrik got into the possession of the family. The name was changed into Carstens Keramik Rheinsberg. In 2005 Carstens adopted the name Silberdistel. Now Carstens Keramik Rheinsberg is established at Rhinstrasse 1, 16831 Rheinsberg.

Carstens manufactured vases from red brown clay. Carstens clearly signed its products with two ingrained small houses with the letters T and C underneath, followed by a shape number plus a figure indicating the height in centimetres and the words ‘W.-Germany’. Sometimes we find a shape number of three digits, followed by a single digit: 1 standing for the smallest shape and 6 for the largest shape. Carstens used gold-coloured stickers with the text: ‘TÖNNIESHOF Carstens W-GERMANY’.

                <description>Ceramano-Kunstkeramik.
Ceramo-Kunstkeramik.
In 1959 Jakob Schwaderlapp, owner of Jasba Keramik in Ransbach, founded an enterprise with the goal of manufacturing superior, hand-made decorative and building ceramics. His son and associate Willi Schwaderlapp took over the responsibility of the concern, in 1964 to be followed by a split-off from the company. The business developed in a positive way by the takeover of the Waku concern. Owing to this the export share increased by a quarter of the joint production. The production range of crockery and other ceramic tableware was further extended. The manufacture of wall and floor tiles provided ceramic wall coverings that were regularly applied in representative interior design. In 1977 the ‘Steinzeug- und Mosaikplattenfabrik Ransbach-Baumbach’ was taken over. In 1984 the firm had to file for insolvency. The foundation of the enterprise had as its goal to obtain a market segment for superior and accordingly costly ceramic objects, of which the production until then was solely restricted to small ceramic workshops. However they had conceived the idea to produce it now by the consistent application of modern production methods admittedly observing the methods of artistic craftsmen. When the enterprise went public with the extensive production range at a detailed advertising campaign by showing their programme at the ‘Frankfurter Frühjahrsmesse’ (Frankfurt Spring Fair), Hans Welling was introduced as the man in charge of not only all shapes and decorations, but also of the entire presentation and product advertising (exhibition stands, catalogues, advertising photography and adverts), the vision of the enterprise and the concept of his entire programme. He was to remain in charge until 1962. After this, design was taken over by Gerda Heuckeroth.

Red-brown clay was used for the manufacture of vases. Most copies have been engraved by hand at the bottom by the decorator. This enhances the effect of unique studio ceramics. The engraving usually consists of the shape number, the decoration name, the initials of the decorator and the name of the concern wit hits location. Whenever there is a shape number present, it is most of the time a 3-digit-number, sometimes followed by a number ranging from 1 to 6 indicating the size, 1 for the smallest and 6 for the largest. Whether or not there is any text depends on the size of the vase. At times we come across the word ‘Handarbeit’ (=Handmade). Vases from later periods were provided with a paper label. One of the early labels was a rectangular label of a reddish colour, later to be followed by a silver label with its shape number.Bron:

                <description>Dümler &amp; Breiden.
Gerz over.
The factory started production in 1883 and was established in Höhr-Grenzhausen, a town renowned for its many ceramics factories. The founders were Peter Dümler (7/11/1860 – 19/04/1907) and his brother-in-law Albert Breiden (12/06/1860 – 27/05/1926). Peter was designer and educated by Reinhold Hanke &amp; Simon Peter Gerz. Albert, educated by his uncle S.P. Gerz was in charge of the concern. Peter died in 1907 and Albert took over the oncern with the help of Bertha, Peter’s widow. Paul Dümler, Peter’s son, followed the footsteps of his father and designed the Terra Sigillata series (this work was based on the style of the old Roman earthenware). His career was very short however for he did not come back from the war. In 1918 a cousin named Ernst Dümler joined the concern and took his place. In 1913 Albert had sold his share in the concern. After WW I Albert managed the S.P. Gerz concern with the help of his two sons, Adolf and Hermann. Albert died in May 1926 at the age of 65 and Hermann was appointed manager of the S.P.Gerz concern.
From the start a lot of traditional earthenware was manufactured like beer jugs, punch bowls and mugs. After the war, during the so called ‘ceramics boom’ of the 50s and 60s, the concern enjoyed a period of strong growth. From 1930 until the end of 1980 D &amp; B was one of the leading ceramics factories. Production of beer jugs was largest between 1890 and the 30-s of the previous century. Beer jug production ceased in 1957. A series of special vases was designed to be recognised by the brand ‘RELIEF’ at the bottom. By the end of the 60s a copper-coloured glaze was developed, in which copper parts were processed. This lends a brillant effect when placed in light. The quality of most vases is supreme. Faulty vases were not in any circumstance allowed to leave the factory. Dümler &amp; Breiden were very successful but lagged behind on the industry leaders of those days: Ruscha and Scheurich. The concern closed its doors in 1995. Dümler &amp; Breiden. Rathausstrasse 56/57, Bahnhofstrasse 39/41, later on Schulstrasse 8/10, Höhr, hesse-Nassau, Prussia. (later on Höhr-Grenzhausen, Rhineland-Palatinate). Kunststeinzeugfabrik und Zinngieserei. Designers employed at Dümler &amp; Breiden, apart from Peter Dümler were: Paul Zimmerling from the years 1951 to 1961 and some time later again from 1968 to 1973, Rudolf Christmann designed from 1952 to 1966 for them, to leave for Carstens some time later. Besides there were the designers Rudolf Kügler and Albin Camillo Müller. Employed at the Sales Department at Dümler &amp; Breiden was Joh. Korzilius.

This concern was established in Höhr-Grenzhausen in Western Germany and was founded in 1898 by Ludwig (although some sources name some Peter) Eckhardt and his brother-in-law Ernst Johann Engler. At first it was a Wholesale trade dealing stone beer jugs. One of the concerns to manufacture these for them was Rosskopf &amp; Gerz. This concern had started in 1901 with Jacob Gerz &amp; Karl Wilhelm Rosskopf in charge. In 1914 Eckhardt &amp; Engler obtained their first oven and in 1922 they purchased all moulds of Gerz keramik that had gone bankrupt. Although Eckhardt &amp; Engler had become more famous because of the beer jugs they produced, they also made a surprising series of vases with splendid shapes and enamels in the 50s and 60s until they discontinued production in 1971.Bron:

                <description>ES Keramik.
In 1948 scheidden hun wegen.
Ontwerpers: o.a. Willi Hack, Hans Krämer.Website : http://www.marei.de/ES Keramik.
On February 17th 1921 Josef Emons and Jean Fuss founded Fuss &amp; Emons in Rheinbach (Nordrhein Westfalen). In 1948 they went separate ways. The Fuss&amp; Emons concern was split in two. From that time J. Emons Söhne, Keramik und Terrakottafabriksold ceramics under the name ES Keramik. Jean Fuss &amp; Sohn manufactured under the nameMarei. In 1971 the ES Keramik business still flourished because of orders from Canada and Australia, but in 1974 the factory had to close down due to the fact that their production did not come up to the taste of the public. Part of the machinery was sold to Ruschka. The adjacent Marei took over the ES Keramik company site and the majority of its workers. Majolikafabrik Rheinbach Jean Fuss&amp; Sohn GmbH &amp;Co. KG, was Marei’s official name but it doesn&#039;t exist anymore. The address was Keramiker Strasse 3 – 17 in Rheinbach.
ES Keramik used white clay, to be enamelled completely afterwards with the effect that the white clay was no more visible. At the bottom there is a 2 or 3-digit model number followed by ‘/’ its height in centimetres in 2 digits. In the 60s en 70s ES Kermik put silver coloured stickers on them, saying ‘KERAMIK ES’ or ‘KERAMIK ES handgemalt’. Designers: among others Willi Hack, Hans Krämer. Website : http://www.marei.de/Bron:

                <description>Fohr Keramik.
Gevestigd in Ransbach-Baumbach.

Fohr Keramik.
Established in Ransbach-Baumbach. The factory was founded in 1859 by Peter Fohr. The production line consisted of earthenware pitchers, vaporizers, and flower pots. In 1934 production was extended with decoration ceramics. In 1945 the concern was divided between the brothers Alfred and Wilhem Fohr.
At the outset the production line was well-ordered,but under the supervision of Wilhelm it was gradually extended during the 50s.
Employed as a designer of shapes and decorations at Fohr since 1956, Walter Grau had his roots in the porcelain industry. He had accomplished his education as a modeller at Blankenhainer Porzellanfabrik named C. &amp; E. Carstens. In 1962 he switched to
AB Rörstrands Porslinfabrik at Lidköping (Sweden). His successor for a period of about two years was to be Walter Weiland, who had worked at the design department forsome months in 1960. Before that time Walter Weiland had been working at Ruscha, Keto Keramik and Marei Keramik, in charge of the department of ceramic art. Starting from the 60s the production of decoration ceramics decreased. The concern was mainly directed to the manufacture of flower pots for decorative plants and dishes for flower arrangements. Export to countries abroad increased. In 1979 a new branch was founded and it was in 1984 that a festive volume was published at the occasion of the 125th jubilee of the concern (Baaden, Franz: 125 Jahre Fohr Keramik 1859-1984, Ransbach-Baumbach 1984). Fohr Keramik is a family concern and one of the few ceramic concerns that has succeeded to be in business for such a long time. Christopher Fohr is in charge of it now. He is part of the fifth generation to be in charge of the Fohr family concern.Bron:

                <description>VEB Haldensleben.
The VEB Haldensleben concern is the continuation of Carstens Uffrecht that had been established by Jacob Uffrecht in 1845. After WWII the Carstens family lost their ceramics and China factories on East German soil. Christian and Ernst Carstens then founded the Carstens Tönnieshof concern in Western Germany. Carstens Uffrecht turned into the East German vase manufacturer VEB Haldensleben in 1945. VEB Haldensleben mainly focused on manufacturing vases. These were of superior quality. Just like the Strehla vases the colours are more subdued than the West German vases. Frequently we see a metallic glaze on the vases. In 1990 Germany was reunited with the effect that the former East German factory was now managed and maintained by the Carstens family. Its name was changed into Carstens Keramik Rheinsberg. Carstens Keramik Rheinsberg is situated at the address: Rhinstrasse 1, 16831 Rheinsberg. VEB Haldensleben applied both white and brown clay. At the bottom we see a circle, in it the letter H and across it a triangle upside down. The vase number consists of four digits most of the time, sometimes followed by a letter or a letter underneath. VEB Haldensleben used to put stickers on its products with a gold coloured label, with the logo printed in red. We do not know which designers they have employed.Bron:

Herzbolheim-Keramik
Herbolzheim Keramik (Herbolzheim Erich Locke GmbH &amp; Co. KG) was established in 1957 by Erich Locke in Herzbolheim, in the south west of Germany. The factory specialised in the production of ceramic wall surrounds, though they also produced plates/bowls/wall plaques. In 1959 they employed 45 people. The factory ceased to exist in 1991.Most items are marked with a molded number and “H” within a circle which is distinctive to Herbolzheim Keramik. Sometimes a number is also marked in ink. White clay was typically used.Bron:

                <description>Ilkra Edelkeramik J.L.

The concern has been founded in 1892 by Jacob Leopold Knödgen and was established in Ransbach-Baumbach. At the time its name was ´Erste Ransbacher Feinsteinzeug Fabrik J.L. Knödgen´. It manufactured typically ´Westerwalder´ products like beer tankards, wine jugs and dishes. In the inter bellum the production switched to everyday use ceramics. Richard Knödgen took over the business.
From this time until 1965 the acronym &#039;Ilkra&#039; was used. Both spellings &#039;Ilkra&#039; and &#039;Jlkra&#039; are documented and stand for Jacob Leopold Knödgen in Ransbach.
After WW II the production of decorative ceramics was resumed and the production range was further extended.
Especially after 1955 vases were produced with a striking shape and glaze. Designers from that time were Ernst Werner, Richard Knödgen´s son-in-law, Josef Koch and Edmund Peter. Richard Knödgen died in 1969 and his son Leo took over the business. Towards the end of the 60s the demand for decorative ceramics decreased and the concern switched to the manufacture of flower pots. Ilkra also produced special series of vases for Riffarth. In 1995 the concern was sold to Wilhelm Söndgen and he possibly renamed it to &#039;Knödgen Keramik&#039;. A new Söndgen mark was registered in the same year. After 1995 products with the Söndgen mark were no longer exclusively produced in the former Knödgen factory, but only glazed (&#039;Nachveredelung&#039;). Before 1995 all items were completely produced in the house.

In the 50-s the Guido Riffarth concern was a ceramics wholesale trade in Frankfurt am Main delivering all kinds of ceramic decorative and every day objects among which the, at the time very popular, wall masks. Besides almost all flower shops in Germany were stocked with vases and flower pots. Objects designed by the firm itself were mostly provided with their own brand: ‘Ri-Keramik’. At First these were delivered by the ‘Meilinger Werkstatten’ concern in Pfronten. Later on numerous other firms like Ü-Keramik and Ilkra delivered their products to Riffarth. In 1959 the business was taken over by one of the daughters Annelies Rosen-Riffarth and remained in existence under the same name. In 1979 the business moved to Vallendar (Rheinland Pfalz).Bron:

                <description>Kiechle.
Kiechle.
In 1947 Arno Kiechle established a ceramics workshop Kiechle &amp; Mast at Weiblingen, together with his former colleague Karl Mast at ‘Kunstgewerbeschule Stuttgart’. In 1949 Karl Mast ended this co-operation and Arno Kiechle continued activities under his own name. From 1952 the concern was represented at the Frankfurt am Main fairs, for the time being also with ceramics for technical purposes.
In 1955 Adele Bolz was employed as decoration designer. She created the so-called ritz decorations (scratchings into the unbaked clay) in engobe ceramics in which she provided the thus arisen areas with different colours of glaze.
Apart from vases mainly wall and floor tiles were produced. She was vital to the concern with her contribution to a positive development showing itself in the increase of personnel employed. In 1950 there were 4 employees. 10 years later the number had grown into 20 people employed.
In 1958 the concern moved to Fornsbach. Arno Kiechle designed the shapes of the vases, modelled numerous base shapes for vases himself being responsible for the development of ceramic finishing. A year later Adele Bolz switched to Ruscha. That same year she was succeeded by Luise Haas.
During the First half of the 60-s production failed to increase notwithstanding the constant quality of her designs and the move to new technology and Arno Kiechle’s creative ideas. It was in 1968 that Luise Haas left the company and Arno Kiechle died one year later. Until his death he was active in the workshop. An attempt of his wife Dorothea Kiechle to continue the business in slimmed-down form ended in a failure. In 1972 the workshop was closed and the firm was abandoned permanently on 30th June 1972. Kiechle vases with a black matt substrate are among the most splendid of their kind both in their designs and in their completion. Wall plates and wall tiles are hard to find. This applies even more so for the vases. Most of the time single decorations remained 3 to 4 years in the production range, but in some cases extended to 8 years. Kiechle vases have been marked with a typically hand-engraved text. A stylised rose as a reference to Rosenheim, the place where he started his First ceramics workshop together with his brother in 1923, followed by a mark of the decorator and a shape number. Engobe is a thin finishing layer that takes a long processing time, either white or coloured, applied on unbaked earthenware to obtain a smooth surface. Often a flux has been added. Application takes place by immersion, spraying or by brush. This technique has frequently been applied in the 50-s, providing vases with ritz decorations, filling the surfaces originating in his process manually with coloured glaze.Bron:

                <description>Kreutz Keramik.
Kreutz Keramik.
Kreutz Keramik was probably founded by Helmut Kreutz in 1958. It was established in Haiger Langenaubach. Kreutz vases often cause confusion in determining their origin because the concern might have delivered to other companies. There are indications that Kreutz has worked for ´Montanus´and for ´Marzi und Remy´. Besides ´Gerlach Keramik´and the wholesale trade firm ´Riffarth´ bought vases from Kreutz to label these with their own. Consequently these were sold as their own products.
As can be seen on the photographs of the bottom of the vases, Kreutz used red clay. Sometimes the shape number was applied at the bottom.
Kreutz vases usually have two paper stickers on them, one prominently present , saying ´Kreutz keramik´ and a second sticker somewhere on the edge near the bottom saying &#039;Handarbeit&#039;.Bron:

                <description>Marzi &amp; Remy.
&#039;Elfenbeinsteinzeug&#039;. (Elfenbein is ivoor).
Marzi &amp; Remy.
This concern was founded in 1879 by Anton Marzi and his brother-in-law Simon Peter Remy. It was established at Höhr- Grenzhausen (Westerwald). In 1880 a pewtery was added to the concern. By 1910 about a hundred people were employed at the company.
This concern is best known for its stone goblets and beer mugs with the characteristic ‘Westerwälder Salzglasur’. Besides there is a large production range of vases, wall tiles and dishes, manufactured in the most splendid shapes and glazes. Marzi and Remy maintained a strict quality standard, with the effect that only products of superior quality left the factory. Gustav Thinwiebel was employed as designer from the very beginning. From his hand originated a graeat amount of beer mugs in the so-called ‘altdeutschen’ style. With this we mean the decorations base don examples from the Renaissance that were favourite between the years 1871 and about 1900. His designs can be recognised by the signature GT. In those days it was customary to provide a beer mug with a tin lid and so it was that a pewtery was was founded in 1881.
A new enterprise success followed in 1883 when they succeeded in manufacturing cream coloured earthenware: the so-called ‘Elfenbeinsteinzeug’ (Elfenbein is ivory). Consequently bowl sets and all kinds of gift articles were added to the production range. By 1900 Marzi &amp;Remy belonged to the leading manufacturers and in this way could attract famous designers like Henry van de velde, Albin Müller and Peter Behrens.
In the interbellum developments were very inconsistent. Especially the recession at the beginning of the 30s left ist traces. During WW II production was switched to simple crockery. After WW II housing was modernised and with this technical facilities. For the time being they stuck to manufacturing traditional products. It was not until 1953 that Otto Georg Bühler, a cousin of Simon Peter Remy was put in charge of the concern and that the production range was adjusted to meet current requirements. Bühler joined the concern as assistant manager in 1949 after his education as a ceramics engineer. He switched to ‘Porzellanfabrik Christian Seltmann’in Weiden in 1951. There he gained a lot of knowledge on glazes and experience with mass production. In 1953 he returned to the top level management and married the young female designer Erika …? Apart from being employed as manager he also worked as a ceramist and designer of glazes and decorations. According to his statement he designed some 5000 decorations. In 1953 Erika Bühler presented a collection with asymmetrical shapes so far only known in China. At the beginning of the 80s the economy of the concern declined and eventually it ended up in a bankruptcy. The concern was taken over by ‘Steingutfabrik Staffel ‘ in 1990. Its last manager Rainer Faber tried to save the enterprise. The business existed until 1996 under the name ‘M + R Keramikfabrik GmbH&#039; to be closed definitely.Bron:

                <description>Roth Keramik.
Roth Keramik.
RothKeramik was founded in the town of Eberhahn by Edmund Roth at the beginning of the 70s. One of the most important designers was Dorothea Roth. Roth is still active and the concern manufactures bathroom and kitchen ceramics. Information about the concern is hard to get, mainly because the Roth family is unwilling to co operate. Although more and more vases are ascribed tpthe Roth concern, their originwas unknown previously or it was thought they originated from other concerns. It has become increasingly obvious that the most beautiful and extravagant glazings originated from the Roth concern. Note October 2012: Co-collectors from the forum www.potteryandglass.forumandco.com have got hold of original catalogues of Marei Keramik. Studying these, it appeared the copies up to now ascribed to Roth, have been made by Marei as a matter of fact.Bron:

                <description>Ruscha-Keramik.
Ruscha sloot haar deuren in 1996.Ruscha-Keramik.
Ruscha-Keramik was founded in 1905 by Georg Schardt and was originally named Klein &amp; Schardt. The concern was established at Rheinbach. In 1948 his son Rudolf Schardt took over the business and called it Ruscha. Ruscha was one of the leading factories in the ‘golden age’ of the ceramics era. It manufactured masterpieces in both vases and wal tiles. In the 70s wall tiles were designed with distinct lava glazes. These beautiful expressive shapes were manufactured for both indoor and outdoor applications. In 1955 the firm employed 150 people and among them were 40 that worked at the decoration department. The most important designers were Cilli Wörsdörfer, she worked at Ruscha from 1952 until the end of 1954 (decors: Domino and Milano). Kurt Tschörner, he designed for Ruscha the jugvase &#039;313&#039; in 1954 and it was produced in numerous different decors until the end of the firm. Klaus Kerwer, during the mid 1950&#039;s he was responsible for designing most of the forms. Hanns Welling, 1956 he became in charge of the design department. He designed a numerous amount of forms and decors and extended the collection with the colorfully decorated Engobe-ceramics. His successor the next year was Gerda Heuckeroth, she worked for Ruscha until 1962 and after that she went to Ceramano. Adele Bolz, she served from 1959 until 1963. Zij extended the collection with numerous new designs and decors. Heinz Siery, he served as a self-employed worker and he contributed to an important extent in the overall image of Ruscha ceramics. Just like other ceramics concerns shape numbers were again used for other designs, which can be very confusing. Ruscha closed its doors in 1996.Bron:

                <description>Sawa.
Sawa.
Sawa was founded in 1904 by Frans Schwaderlapp and was established in Ransbach-Baumbach. Originally it was a factory producing abrasives, but very soon it switched to producing vases and pottery. ‘Gardening with independent watering’ was seen as its speciality.
Extending the production line with decoration ceramics did not start until after the end of WW II. In 1951under the name of ‘SAWA-Keramik’, it started the production of manually and artistically manufactured ceramics.
Heinrich-Maria Müller was employed as its chief designer from 1951 to 1965. He designed and decorated numerous vases by his own hand.
There were 3 varieties ‘K’ (= Kerbschnitt, viz. Manual application of grooves in unbaked clay, aka sgrafito), ‘P’ (= plastischer Kerbschnitt) and ‘S’ (= sigilata: application of relief by figure stamps). Often these methods were very labour- intensive, thus costly.
Until it was sold in 1992, the business was in the possession of the Schwaderlapps. Sawa was one of a number of concerns to manufacture this sgrafito-style decorations, using red-brown clay for the production of the vases, making them hard to identify them from concerns such as Eiwa, Wekara and Kule and from some specimens by Dümler &amp; Breiden from the 50-s. D &amp; B vases are usually marked. Eiwa vases have their decoration names imprinted at the bottom, together with their shape numbers. Decorations on Sawa vases are usually applied a bit more deeply into the clay of the vases, whereas Eiwa vases have a small groove just across the top colour layer, just about enough to show the colour of the substrate.
The quality level of the production of vases was very high, therefore species with ‘flaws’ were not allowed to leave the factory.
From the end of the 80-s until 1992 Sawa also manufactured a series of Römertopf dishes.Bron:

                <description>Scheurich.
In 1928 Alois Scheurich and his cousin Fridolin Greulich founded a wholesale trade in glass, China and ceramics in Schneeberg near Amorbach. In 1938 Scheurich established its concern in Kleinheubach (70 km south east of Frankfurt). The business is still in existence to this day. In 1948 the manufacture of Household ceramics was started. In 1954 Scheurich ceased wholesale activities and established the Scheurich KG Keramikfabrik concern. It was directed completely to the self-manufacture of ceramics. At first they mainly produced decorative ceramics for fairs. Subsequently they switched to the production of vases, figures, dishes, wall tiles and lamp bases. Scheurich’s hegemony started towards the end of the 60s. Scheurich kept its prices low, and combined with the especially appreciated designs, catered for a several-millions’-worth-turnover. Scheurich’s strategy in this was as simple as effective: the same shapes were provided with varying decorations. Twice a year the designs were adapted to the changing taste of the public. The most important designers were: Heinz Siery, A. Seidel, Monica Schödel-Müller, Werner Nowka. The most successful vase shapes occur in dozens of glaze versions (decorations). Heinz Siery designed vase shape 271-22 in 1959. This fashion-led style lasted for decades. Another important shape designer was A.Seidel. The main glaze designer was Oswald Kleudgen. Bron:

Schlossberg Keramik.

                <description>Silberdistel Keramik.

The concern was founded by Johann and Grete Breu in 1947 and established in Gevelsberg in Nordrhein Westfalen. The name ‘Silberdistel’ is the German name for a plant named carline thistle that grows in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. The factory stayed a small studio, also during the fast expansion of the ceramics industry in Germany in the 50s and 60s. One of the most important designers of Silberdistel was Uwe Kerstan. Light, white clay was used for the manufacture of the vases. The early specimen were all branded either ’Germany’or ‘W Germany’in the edge or at the centre of the bottom. This has been left out with the vases that were manufactured in later years. A shape number and the size in height were engraved on the bottom side, but there are also vases known with which numbering was applied by means of a mould. A reduced number of vases were provided with a Silberdistel brand. Besides we see vases with green adhesive felt glued to the bottom. The concern deteriorated in the 80s. In 2005 the brand ‘Silberdistel’was sold to Carstens. From that time onwards ceramics were produced in the factory of Carstensin Rheinsberg near Berlin. The present production line consists of 150 different shapes in 3 decorations (Island, Sahara and Korall).

Spara.
The name Spara is a composition of SPang RAnsbach. Ludwig Spang founded the company in 1947 and it was settled in Ransbach.
Just like many other ceramic companies Spara didn&#039;t leave a paper archive. The production started end 1960-ies and the firm ceased to exist in 1985. The factory was taken over by &#039;Hark&#039; a company that was producing ovens. The key designer was Halidun Kutlu from 1971-1972. He was responsible for most of the designs. He also worked at Karlsruhe Majolika. Light colored clay was used for the production of vases (some older vases are made of orange-red clay). Many vases had received the name Spara through the mold or the name was stamped on the bottom afterwards. Studio items were produced and these were given the name stamped and the shape number was hand-applied to the bottom. Not all vases were given the name Spara.Bron:

                <description>Strehla Keramik (VEB Sachsen).
Strehla gebruikte meestal bruine klei.
This factory was established in Dresden in 1828. Some sources say that the concern derived its name from the town of Strehla in Saxony and that it had been established there originally. The business was taken over by Steingutfabrik Colditz AG in 1930. After WW II the situation changed. The area became East-Germany and the concern changed its name into VEB Steingutfabrik Strehla, VEB meaning ‘Volkseigener Betrieb’. That is to say a business that was public property in the German Democratic Republic
(1949-1990). The East-German business mainly manufactured vases and flower-pots in the 60s and 70s, to be exported in great quantities to the Netherlands among other countries. That is why Strehla vases are harder to find in Germany than vases from West-German concerns.
The colour of the produce of the East German manufacturer Strehla is subdued, certainly when compared to West German produce. Quite often a metal enamel is applied on top of the base enamel layer. Most of the time Strehla used brown clay. At the bottom the brand name Strehla is imprinted by means of an ink stamp ( at times indecipherable), surrounded by a kind of hexagon . Quite often ‘GDR’ has been indicated. The serial number of the vase usually consists of four digits and is imprinted at the bottom. Strehla seldom put a sticker on its produce. The concern closed its doors in 1989.Bron:

Ontwerpers: Heinz Hommerich, Leonhard Steiger.Ü-Keramik
Ü-Keramik was founded in 1909 by tin Smith Johann Übelacker. The factory originally was a pewtery, later to be expanded by the manufacture of earthenware, terracotta and glazed ceramics. Ü-Kermik was characterized by a great variety in its production. The concern produced lots of vases in rectangular shapes (‘chimney vases’) from its location at Ransbach-Baumbach. After Johann’s death in the mid-50s, his three sons took over the business and continued with the production of splendid glazed vases and innovating shapes. Sale peaked with the presentation of its catalogue in 1958. 25 Modern vase shapes were shown in it with possible delivery in 66 different sizes and in 15 different decorations. Large part of the production was exported to Scandinavia and Austria. Ü-Keramik was the first concern in Germany to produce vases with a selenium red glaze finish in 1954. This process had been designed by artistic leader Heinz Hommerich. Wrong investment in Ireland caused a bankruptcy for this concern in 1990. Designers were: Heinz Hommerich, Leonhard Steiger.Bron:

<description>The factory at Herend was founded in 1826 by Vince Stingl as an earthenware pottery manufacturing factory; Stingl also carried out research experiments on porcelain making. Stingl ran out of funds and subsequently went bankrupt; his creditor Mór Fischer took control of the factory in 1839. Fischer, an ambitious man with new ideas, started manufacturing artistic porcelain in the same year. At that time it was almost impossible to replace broken pieces and supply old, classical porcelain dinner-sets from the Far East and from Europe; so by 1849 Fischer&#039;s was selling his wares to the Hungarian aristocracy.

Lajos Kossuth, the famous Hungarian president once said[3] due to the achieved successes about the Herend Porcelain Manufacture:

&quot;an ornate sign of the joyful development of the home-made industry&quot;

— Lajos Kossuth

Herend displayed its designs at the First Hungarian Applied Art Exhibition, the Vienna Exhibition in 1845, the Great Exhibition in London, 1851, the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York, 1853 and the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1855. The styles became popular, and orders were received on behalf of several royal courts: Queen Victoria, Francis Joseph I of Austria, Maximillian, the Mexican emperor.

Herend&#039;s &quot;Chinese&quot; pattern

Some well-known patterns were named for the first customers: (Queen Victoria, Esterházy, Batthyány, Rothschild, Apponyi). In 1865 Francis Joseph I gave a noble title to Fischer, in appreciation of his work in porcelain art. From 1872 Mór Fischer Farkasházy, Purveyor to the Royal Court, was entitled to use the shapes and patterns of the Manufactory of Vienna, which had closed down.

In 1874 Fischer gave the management of the manufactory to his sons. These men changed the focus of the company away from artistic creation, and sales began to decline. The factory had several owners, and went almost bankrupt. At the end of the century, the grandson of the founder, Jenő Farkasházy, became the owner of the factory. Farkasházy was a trained ceramist, who had gained experience in foreign factories and began to create new designs and revive traditional patterns. He also introduced novelties in 1900 Paris and 1901 St. Petersburg.

Between the two world wars, limited reproduction of traditional products, from the age of Fischer, was continued. Hungarian figures were also manufactured, replicas of the work of Hungarian sculptors.

In 1948 the company was nationalised. In 1993 it was privatised, and in 2015 75% is owned by the management and workers.

<description>HISTORY OF HOLLOHAZAThe History of Hollohazi Porcelain factory( An Early picture from the factory and Karolyi)Hollóháza porcelain is produced by the Porcelain Manufactory of Hollohaza Hungary. The manufactory was founded in 1777, originally as glassworks. It is one of the oldest remaining, now state-owned porcelain manufactury in Hungary.

Hollohazi porcelain is one of the oldest porcelain manufactory in Europe and it is the oldest in Hungary, dating back to 1777. The factory just recently celebrated its 240th year in business, still on the original site in rural Northeastern Hungary amid lush forests and rolling hills. In the beginning, they only made rudimentary, although visually appealing glass cups, bottles and dishes. At the dawn of the 19th century, the glass industry has flourished. However, the main transport routes and the raw materials needed to manufacture glass were far from the factory site. So, the owner of the factory, Karolyi decided to turn it into a ceramic manufactory in 1831, using the kaolin clay found nearby.

From the very beginning, there were multiple owners of the manufactory, but the first real upswing came in 1857 under the ownership of Ferenc Istvanyi. He developed the small plant into a major manufacturing facility. This ensured full employment in the barely 700 soul village. Although the products were made in a factory, they were still very folksy artifacts. The decorations and motifs were passed on from father to son, hand to hand. Ornamental porcelain such as figurines, lamps, wall clock appeared with the advent of the 20th century. After the post-World War I restart in 1923, the management went to great lengths to ensure the correct material composition of the porcelain. The price of porcelain goes ever higher, new products are being developed; However -due to the lending banks bankruptcy- the factory closes for 8 months. Another upswing begins in 1939, when a new tenant, a trader named Karoly Szakmary takes over. He sets off with great ambition to improve production and capacity of the artistically and technically outdated manufactory. He had installed a new coal-fired furnace; replaced the outdated steam-powered generator for new, electrical equipment, three modern electric furnaces were also installed which allowed for new production methods to be implemented for the newest designs. The factory can finally satisfy the needs and tastes of not only the rural population, but of the metropolitan gentry as well. Unfortunately, Karoly Szakmary is prevented from finishing his plans, when the factory is nationalized by the communist state after World War II, in 1948.

After the nationalization, Hollohazi Porcelain was only allowed to manufacture industrial porcelain, such as electrical insulators. The first applied art pieces will come only in 1957. Starting from the 1960s young and talented artists are taking over the new product development, establishing Hollohazi Porcelain Mfg as an important site for the Hungarian and lately, all- European art scene.

Demand has been constantly growing for Hollohazi porcelain’s newly designed and traditional ornaments and table wares. People appreciate the beauty of Hollohazi porcelain from Japan to America and beyond.

<description>Czechoslovak pressed glass is phenomenon which has emerged in our country in the early 60s.

Glass pressing using mechanical machine into metal mold began in 1830 in USA. The local glassmakers improved and speeded up the production to the level that pressed glass became available article. It is considered a cheap substitute for more expensive cut glass.

In the Czech Republic the first press appeared in Novosvetské glassworks in 1833. In following period the production expanded to other Czech glassworks. Art styles, which dominated in 60s of 19th century were Empire, Gothic, and Biedemayer. Often it was an imitation of diamond cut. Motives of plants and flowers were favorite. Only in the early 20 century the modern approach of pressed glass appeared.

A great attention was given to patterning of pressed glass, mainly by Prague Company Inwald, where they started to press very good quality and progressive glass in 20 and 30 years of 20th century.

Rudolf Schrötter is usually considered to be the first actual designer of pressed glass. He mastered the work with the press and connected artistic values with functionality. His designs were made for several decades. Schrötter is attributed with the legendary glass design “Duritka“, which production has begun in 1934 and it is produced until today.

During the World War II the entire glass industry was subdued. After the war most of the glassworks were expropriated and centralized in national enterprises. Exclusive export of glass was secured by SKLOEPXPORT Company.

After the war ends, the first generation of artist who strives to improve our pressed glass comes. These designers were František Pečený, Jiři Zejmon, Miloš Filip and Adolf Matura.
Václav Hanuš joined them later. In 1953 a thought to significantly enhance the glass production with new designs arose. A collaboration with Artistic industrial school in Prague is established. At the time Jozef Kaplický and Karel Štipl were professors who pay attention to the technique of glass pressing. In 60s and 70s a new generation of artist who passed the atelier of prof. Karl Štipl comes. Those artist were František Vízner, Vladislav Urban, Rudolf Jurnikl, Jiří Brabec, Pavel Pánek and Peter Zajíc. They brought a new approach to work with materials, shapes, optics, colors and decor itself.

In the 60s a new generation of artists comes, including František Vízner, Vladislav Urban, Rudolf Jurnikl. In the 60s a remarkable works, which did not imitate the previous designs were created. A thick walled pressed glass with distinctive reliefs, rotating objects, various decorations and lens effects appears. A strong designer trio Vízner – Urban – Jurnikl among others took place in the history of pressed glass with their unique designs

Overall renaissance of glass making was caused partly by prevailing communist regime. It took art as a tool to spread ideology. Functional objects were not a subject to significant political pressure and designs of functional objects were agreed without restrictions. Pressed glass remained so to speak untouched and the artists were free to create. Understandably the regime did not overlook the popularity of Czechoslovak glass and started to export abroad in bulk. In 1965 a concern company SKLO UNION was established uniting all Czech and Moravian glassworks producing pressed glass.

Glass was pressed mostly by hand. A phenomenon is that the hand press enabled greater variability. Of course there was also a fully automatic production, but it specialized on table sets.

Czechoslovak author’s glass shone for the first time at EXPO 58 in Brussels, however pressed glass was represented on the subsequent exhibitions Milan 60, EXPO 67 in Montreal or EXPO 70 in Osaka.

Pressed glass is made for masses and gradually it found a way to our households. Maybe, if you look in your parents’ house you come across many collectors gems.

                <description>AUGUST WALTHER GLASS FROM
THE GLASS ENCYCLOPEDIAA short explanation of August Walther Glass:

August Walther founded his glassworks in 1888 at Ottendorf-Okrilla near Dresden, and called it August Walther &amp; Sohne AG. They produced a wide range of table ware and ornamental glass, and they are best known for their art deco figurines and designs from the 1930s. They made a version of &quot;Cloud Glass&quot; that is so similar to the Cloud Glass made by Davidson&#039;s of England, that for many years it was assumed that Davidson&#039;s was the only company who made this kind of coloured glass with contrasting streaks.

We now know that August Walther made Cloud Glass in the 1930s and their name for it was &quot;Oralit&quot;. Their colours were different from Davidson&#039;s, and that does make it easier to distinguish ORALIT, which was made in sepia, violet, malichit (like the vase shown below on the left), pink, butterscotch, and amber. Sepia and violet were the earliest colours, introduced in 1932, and they are also the most common. Malachit is sometimes called &quot;topaz-purple&quot; by collectors, and this colour was introduced in 1935. Note that the shape of this malachit cloud glass vase is very similar to a shape produced by Bagley Glass in the 1930s and named &quot;Bamboo&quot;.

Walther merged with Saxonian Glass company in 1932 and became &quot;Sachsische Glasfabrik August Walther and Sohne AG&quot;. They continued with the same production lines. For some reason, in 1937 August Walther registered 18 of their designs with the Patent Office in the UK. This may have been because their designs were being copied, as there are similar designs to Walther&#039;s which were made by Bagley Glass in the UK and by Crown Crystal Glass in Australia. There are also Walther&#039;s designs which are marked &quot;Belgique&quot; (some Atlas bowls for example).

After WW2 the company was nationalised and became &quot;VEB Sachsenglas&quot;, continuing to make many of the same designs from the same molds and export them, principally to England, and in ever-decreasing volumes. By the mid 1960s it had become very difficult for East German companies to export into Western Europe. In addition the original moulds which had been used by August Walther from 1933-1939 were by this time totally worn out, and new moulds would be needed if production of these items was to continue. VEB Sachsenglas decided in 1965 to stop the production of pressed glass from August Walther moulds for these reasons. The company continued to operate until about 1990 when East &amp; West Germany were unified. Most of the glass works in Eastern Germany were closed following unification, and VEB Sachsenglas was one of them.

Over the years Walther must have produced a huge amount of glass, beautiful figurines as well as cloud glass items. They re-opened in West Germany and are well known today operating under the name Mikasa in West Germany. Quality retail and on-line sales companies offer Mikasa glassware, crockery and cutlery. Their label reads MIKASA sometimes with W. Germany added. They also promote their glassware as WALTHER KRISTALLGLAS, and the packaging may be marked &quot;Original Walther Glass&quot;. Company catalogues are available, they sometimes turn up on eBay. And just to add to the confusion the name MIKASA is applied to a series of Christmas glassware named &quot;CELEBRATION&quot; and labelled MIKASA Made in Japan. There are also heavy crystal vases like the MIKASA Wyndham vase which was also made in Japan.

So don&#039;t judge by the cover!
